Mayor's Coulmn

Harry Clarke, Liberal Democrat Mayor of Gainsborough is now writing a fortnightly coulmn in the Gainsborough Standard. Buy the Standard to read the current column. We post previous columns below.

2 February 2012- Mayor looks to the Diamond Jubilee Summer

Although we are still in the depths of winter I want to look forward to the summer in this Diamond Jubilee Year of Her Majesty the Queen. I am sure many Gainsborough people will mark this event with celebrations of their own. The Town Council will, as usual, support the annual Riverside Festival to be held on Sunday June 16th. It is a festival organised by townsfolk for townsfolk and relies heavily on volunteers and support from the Gainsborough business community. This year the Riverside Festival Committee want to feature an Olympic theme, and anything that encourages physical exercise sporting activity gets my support, but I am sure the Diamond Jubilee will not be overlooked. Over the next few weeks I will be happy to meet with the business community to encourage them to support this and other Diamond Jubilee events. However I do need to know what events groups are planning this summer so do write and let me know your plans.

Thinking of exercise and our riverside the Trent Valley Way is a walking route besides the river from Stoke to the Humber. It is some 170 miles of paths. In Gainsborough we have a problem with access to the riverside in some parts of the town so the route crosses the Trent Bridge and takes paths on the Nottinghamshire side. Gainsborough schools are now designing guides for short walks from Littleborough to West Stockwith.

The consultant commissioned jointly by West Lindsey and ourselves last autumn to study how Gainsborough Town Council should operate has now made recommendations approved by the Council on 10 January. The area in need of most work is financial management. I am very pleased to announce that West Lindsey District Council will be arranging training for our staff and councillors in using a system similar to theirs.

Finance will be featured at the next Gainsborough Town Council meeting when a representative from ABC Accounting Services, the company Gainsborough Town Council has engaged for some years to do its management accounting, will attend to answer questions on the 2010/11 Accounts they have complied.

Also at our Town Council meeting Lincolnshire County Council will make a presentation on the proposed Waste Transfer Station in Marhsall Way. It is designed to store waste collected by West Lindsey's bin trucks before being transported to the North Hykeham incinerator by bigger trucks reducing the number of lorries making long journeys on the county's roads. Our Town Council meeting comes just one week before LCC Planning Committee make their decision on this so if you have any comments do tell any town councillor your view before our meeting. Full details can be found athttp://eplanning.lincolnshire.gov.uk/ePlanning/tabPage3.jsp?aplId=30075

The Town Council meeting takes place at 7 p.m. in the West Lindsey District Council Chamber at the Guildhall, Marshall's Yard on Tuesday 7 February. Moving our meeting to the Guildhall is a trial to see if holding a meeting in the town centre rather than out at Roses Pavilion will attract more residents to attend. It is your council and we really want to welcome you to the meeting.

12 January 2012 - Town Mayor's New Year Message

Times are hard for many Gainsborough residents and  with costs and charges going up all over the please it gives me great pleasure to announce that Gainsborough Town Council are able to reduce their budget for the year staring this April which means we will  reduce the charge made to each household by 3.8%.  Not only have we been able to reduce the budget we are able to maintain existing services and plan improvements to such things as bus shelters and play areas.

During the course of 2012 the Town Council is committed to a number of changes in its governance resulting from the recommendations  of a consultant the commissioned last autumn.  These will result in better financial management and the development of a five year plan in consultation with local people. The new structure for the council will be introduced in May. Before then we shall be consulting with organisations in the town and inviting you the residents to have your say.

Don't wait for us to consult with you. I am pleased to receive ideas that will improve  Gainsborough. It may be that what you want is not in the power of the Town Council to deliver but we will be consulting with other authorities and organisations that can help provide what  our town needs.

Of course not every one will be happy with the changes, you can't please all of the people all of the time, but I can assure you that changes will be made with the objective of making Gainsborough a better place for the majority of people  who live, work and visit our town.

I am delighted to be able to wish you a happy and prosperous year with the news that in April the Gainsborough Town Council element of your council tax bill be be lower.
